Who we are

You’re reading this job description because somebody taught you how. You became “somebody” as a result. Unfortunately, our nation’s most recent reading results show that over 70% of fourth-grade students would not be able to read this job description. At Bloom, we’re building a world in which everybody gets to be somebody. How? By ensuring every kid, everywhere, is a reader.

Learning to read is complex because human beings were never born to read. Our brains need to be intentionally rewired and reformed to read, which requires consistent high-quality instruction. That’s how a “reading brain” develops. Simply put, reading teachers are neurosurgeons, who require the right tools to address the complexities of teaching reading. Bloom is that tool.

Bloom is an early reading app that is aligned to cognitive research on how children learn to read and will teach students the foundational reading skills required to develop into skilled readers. Through the power of automatic speech recognition technology and the magic of human-centered instruction, we are building a groundbreaking approach to digital learning that will reach 1,000,000 students in the next five years.

Bloom is a funded Pre-Seed company that grew out of a non-profit organization that coaches school and system leaders to build, implement and sustain reading ecosystems that live at the intersection of research and instructional equity. Bloom is being incubated at Workshop Ventures, a venture studio that partners with founders to build startups in climate and education. Together, we are in the process of building out the internal team that will shape the lives of students across the country.

We have a lot of work to do–and that is where you come in! We are looking for exceptional people to join our founding team and win our mission by building a ground-breaking digital reading curriculum that not only delivers great instruction, but ensures every kid, everywhere, is a reader.

What you will do

As the Head of Product, you will be a crucial member of our founding team, reporting directly to the Founder and CEO. Your primary responsibility will be to translate the academic and instructional vision of our company into a scalable, market-ready product. You'll oversee the entire product development lifecycle and will be instrumental in building and leading a high-performing product function for our young company.

Product Strategy and Vision

  • Collaborate closely with the Founder and CEO to define and articulate the product vision.
  • Develop and manage the product roadmap, aligning it with the company's educational and business objectives to make highly effective early literacy instruction accessible to millions more kids.

Product Development and Execution

  • Lead the end-to-end product development process, ensuring timely and successful execution.
  • Be hands-on in problem-solving; ready to 'roll up your sleeves' to ensure product success.
  • Start deep in the details, turning the early product vision into delightful, engaging, and instructionally effective designs.
  • Work hand-in-hand with the technical team to translate our vision into a breakthrough product.

User-Centric Design

  • Conduct user research - understanding how students, teachers, and other users engage, generating insights to inform product decisions.
  • Develop features and functionalities that deliver a user-centric and educationally effective experience.

Product Impact and Innovation

  • Analyze user interaction and assessment data to make informed decisions for product improvements.
  • Stay abreast of educational trends and emerging technologies in the literacy and Edtech space.

You are someone who

You would be a great match for this role if you had:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in product management.
  • Proven experience in the K-12 educational space, particularly in developing educational technologies.
  • Ability to translate academic theories and complex educational strategies into practical product features.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

It would be a plus if you had:

  • Experience building an early-stage product from zero to one.
  • Knowledge of educational technologies, trends, and emerging practices in the Edtech industry.

You are someone who shares our values

  • Be cosmically urgent: You move with cosmic urgency-the vital urge to change things in a way that will benefit all people so everyone feels a sense of “somebodyness.”
  • Stay constantly curious: You ask “How might we?” when solving challenges.
  • Pursue excellence over perfection: You prioritize individuals and the interactions that will move people to achieve outcomes over following a process that won’t get them there.
  • Do hard things in a human way: You choose courage over comfort by facing difficult tasks and conversations rather than avoiding them.
  • Invest in our collective success: You get your hands dirty; you will never say, “That’s not my job,” “That’s not my problem to solve,” or “I don’t care.”

Compensation

This is a full-time staff position with an annual salary range of $80,000 - $120,000 and founding team equity appropriate for an early-stage company. A compensation offer is based on relevant years of experience in relation to the position and location. Because of our strong commitment to equity and growth, we do not negotiate or place compensation outside of the range.
