Learning to read is complex because human beings were never born to read. Our brains need to be intentionally rewired and reformed to read, which requires consistent high-quality instruction. That’s how a “reading brain” develops. Simply put, reading teachers are neurosurgeons, who require the right tools to address the complexities of teaching reading. Bloom is that tool.

Bloom is an early reading app that is aligned to cognitive research on how children learn to read and will teach students the foundational reading skills required to develop into skilled readers. Through the power of automatic speech recognition technology and the magic of human-centered instruction, we are building a groundbreaking approach to digital learning that will reach 1,000,000 students in the next five years.

Bloom is a funded Pre-Seed company that grew out of a non-profit organization that coaches school and system leaders to build, implement and sustain reading ecosystems that live at the intersection of research and instructional equity. Bloom is being incubated at Workshop Ventures, a venture studio that partners with founders to build startups in climate and education. Together, we are in the process of building out the internal team that will shape the lives of students across the country.

We have a lot of work to do–and that is where you come in! We are looking for exceptional people to join our founding team and win our mission by building a ground-breaking digital reading curriculum that not only delivers great instruction, but ensures every kid, everywhere, is a reader.

What you will do

As the Founding Engineer at Bloom, you will be at the forefront of shaping the future of literacy. Your role involves more than just crafting a high-quality digital experience; it's about revolutionizing the way children learn to read and transforming their entire educational journey.

Collaborating closely with the Head of Product, the CEO and Workshop, you will have a hands-on role in designing, architecting, and building our innovative product. Your leadership will not only oversee contractors and future development hires but also inspire a team dedicated to creating a brighter, more literate future for the next generation.

What we’re looking for


We need someone with a breadth of experience who can drive technical decisions and own all aspects of the tech stack. You should be flexible to work up and down the stack from front end frameworks to infrastructure automation and lead others along the way. And through it all you should strike that delicate balance between excellently built software and moving quickly.

You will:

  • Work across all aspects of the tech, from the infrastructure to the web app
  • Work with product to turn requirements into development tasks and create and maintain a technical roadmap
  • Establish and maintain engineering best practices around code quality, development processes and testing
  • Combine tooling and standards with strong mentorship and feedback to scale the engineering team over time
  • Be a core developer, writing code and deploying features to deliver the product in time to meet critical deadlines with support from Workshop, contractors and future full time hires

You have:

  • At least 5-7 years of experience as a software engineer
  • Worked across the front end, the backend and with various databases and can articulate technology tradeoffs
  • Experience with AWS or a similar cloud platform and have developed IAC tooling
  • Worked effectively with React, or a comparable frontend framework (Vue, Svelte, etc)
  • Deep Knowledge with at least 1 backend language (NodeJS, Python, etc) and can pick up new ones easily
  • A strong analytical mind, able to take complex problems, break them down into digestible components and describe them well so others can build effectively

It would also be a plus if you have:

  • Managed or led an engineering team
  • Worked with audio processing in the browser
  • Deep knowledge about ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) or have implemented ASR solutions
  • Generic knowledge about ML solutions and how to deploy them at scale
  • Worked at a startup or have built a product from zero to having paying users

Our Current Tech Stack

Here is our current tech stack, to give you an idea of what you’ll be jumping into on day 1. This position, however, will be pivotal in shaping the future of the tech stack.

Infrastructure & CI

  • We’re currently in AWS
  • Using ECS (Elastic Container Service) to deploy Docker containers for our backend.
  • Amplify to deploy our Static React Web App
  • Github Actions to deploy to ECS
  • S3 for video / audio file storage
  • We leverage NX to build and deploy a monorepo where we share Typescript types and libraries across the stack


  • We use NodeJS with Typescript to run our API server
  • Using Koa for the web framework
  • MongoDB as the backing data store


  • Static React App
  • MUI (Material UI)


  • Jest & Cypress for E2E & Unit Tests

This is a full time position with an annual salary range of $130,000 to $150,000 and founding team equity appropriate for an early stage company. A compensation offer is based on relevant years of experience in relation to the position and location. Because of our strong commitment to equity and growth, we do not negotiate or place compensation outside of the range.
